The cup commenced early January with the first round ties giving one of the biggest victories ever recorded of an opening round, a 27-0 victory for Arthurlie over St James. In round two Inver-Ross, newly promoted to the Scottish Women’s Premier League for season 2002/03 disposed of Baillieston Juniors 11-1, with Whitehill Welfare seeing of St Johnstone 7-2. Then into the third round which kept Whitehill Welfare, Inver-Ross, Hamilton Athletic and Hamilton Accies all in with a chance. Round four saw the introduction of the Premier division and the biggest upset of the tournament when Inver-Ross won 4-3 over Ayr United, SWFL League Champions. FC Kilmarnock got a round dozen against Clyde LFC and Giuliano’s LFC were the only premier division side to be knocked when they lost to Raith Rovers.

At the quarter-final stage Hibernian made the trip to Inverness to see the home team lose 2-0, with Glasgow City defeating Shettleston 3-1 and Dundee v Kilmarnock giving 8 in the net for Killie and Cove Rangers winning 3-0 over Raith.

The final showcase for the Cup was FC Kilmarnock V Glasgow City, at Almondvale Stadium in Livingston, as the highlight of the women’s national day.

Having already defeated their Ayrshire rivals Ayr United in the League Cup Final securing the Premier League title which gave them entry into Europe, Kilmarnock were keen to add further silverware and become treble winners

Kilmarnock opened play in the 28th minute courtesy of Megan Sneddon from the edge of the box. Pauline Hammill made it two just after the 38th minute followed by goals from Linda Brown, Donna Cheyne and another from Linda Brown.

Glasgow City was unable to get a grip on the game and lacked the guile to break away from their markers. They left disappointed, but not disgraced as they faced a team full of confidence and packed with many player who have regular appearances for their country.
