season 2002/03 disposed of Baillieston Juniors 11-1, with Whitehill
Welfare seeing of St Johnstone 7-2. Then into the third round which kept
Whitehill Welfare, Inver-Ross, Hamilton Athletic and Hamilton Accies all
in with a chance. Round four saw the introduction of the Premier division
and the biggest upset of the tournament when Inver-Ross won 4-3 over Ayr
United, SWFL League Champions. FC Kilmarnock got a round dozen against
Clyde LFC and Giuliano’s LFC were the only premier division side to be
knocked when they lost to Raith Rovers.
At the quarter-final stage Hibernian made the trip to Inverness to see the
home team lose 2-0, with Glasgow City defeating Shettleston 3-1 and Dundee
v Kilmarnock giving 8 in the net for Killie and Cove Rangers winning 3-0
over Raith.
The final showcase for the Cup was FC Kilmarnock V Glasgow City, at
Almondvale Stadium in Livingston, as the highlight of the women’s national
day.
Having already defeated their Ayrshire rivals Ayr United in the League Cup
Final securing the Premier League title which gave them entry into Europe,
Kilmarnock were keen to add further silverware and become treble winners
Kilmarnock opened play in the 28th minute courtesy of Megan Sneddon from
the edge of the box. Pauline Hammill made it two just after the 38th
minute followed by goals from Linda Brown, Donna Cheyne and another from
Linda Brown.
Glasgow City was unable to get a grip on the game and lacked the guile to
break away from their markers. They left disappointed, but not disgraced
as they faced a team full of confidence and packed with many player who
have regular appearances for their country.
