ARNISTON RANGERS V NEWTONGRANGE STAR
Bottom of the premier league Arnie met middle of the league Nitten in a tie for the above Cup.
The Star started favourites in this local derby having drawn their previous encounter at Newbyres and Arnie having won only once in the league at home this season but it does not always go by the script.
With Arniston having to make a few changes what with injuries and call offs they were only able to have one sub. on the bench.
The game started one bright day with the ground very heavy.
They game ended with Nitten down to nine men and Arnie down to ten in a game which was played hard but never dirty.
Arniston were first on attack with their young forwards playing a good passing game’
Their goal came in seven minutes and what a great individual effort it was.
Collecting the ball in his own half No.7 David Honjigawa weaved his way past three defenders before slotting it past the Stars keeper.
Arniston controlled the game for most of the rest of the half without able to extend their lead. They were playing the ball well from defence to attack.
However Andy Ritchie in the home goal had to be brave going down to save just on the interval.
HALF TIME ARNISTON 1 NEWTONGRANGE 0
As expected the Star came out strong and put great pressure on the home defence who were coping magnificently.
The home keeper made two excellent saves being hurt in getting down first to a thru ball and colliding with an oncoming Nitten forward.
Tiredness was showing with some of the Arnie forwards but they were still dangerous on the break.
It appeared that David’s wonder goal was going to be enough to take Arniston into the next round but with 4 minutes into injury time the Star won a foul out on the right.
By this time the ref had dismissed one Arniston player and two Stars.
The free kick was shot hard and low into the Rangers penalty area and was deflected into the net off an Arnie player.
Arniston had time to go up park and gain a corner which came to nothing.
