| Dalkeith Thistle v Arniston Rangers - the Dalkeith Thistle with a weak team opposed the Arniston Rangers on Saturday last on their ground at Bridgend, before a fair number of spectators. The ground all over was in a very bad state, the front of both goals being sheeted with ice, a supply of salt doing no good. Punctual to the advertised hour the game was set a-going, and in a few minutes Thomson sent in a shot which to all appearances was simple enough, but the treacherous ground gave the visiting custodian no chance to save. The Rangers pulled themselves together, and for a time it looked as if it would not be long ere they had equalised, but their shooting not being of a reliable nature their chance was consequently lost. They kept at the aggressive work, and were soon awarded a foul near the Thistle citadel, which was ultimately converted into to an equalising point. The remainder of the first half was pretty evenly contested, neither team adding to its score. The half-time result thus showed a point in favour of each team. On resumption a good deal of spirit was put into the game by the two elevens, and considering the insecure footing it continued at a fast pace. The home team made an early attack and their wings did some good work, Lennie sending in a fine shot which struck the cross bar. The opposing backs cleared but returning to the charge Lennie had a second try from the extreme left. The goalkeeper had his work cut out for him, and tried hard to evade all attempts at bringing down his posts, but he was unable to cope with the pressure and the leather was sent through in favour of the home men for the second time. The point was disputed by some of the Rangers men, but the referee decided that the goal was legitimate. The strangers took up the running and in a short time equalised through a blunder on the part of one of the home backs. "Turn about" was the order of the day, and from a combined run Thomson headed in a goal for the Thistle. A short interval of give-and-take play ensued, the strangers left, subsequently, having a combined run to the home goal from which a swift shot was sent past the custodian. The game was once more equally divided as far a points were concerned, but before the close of the game the Rangers added another point, whilst the Thistle failed to augment their score. The match thus ended - Rangers 4 - Thistle 3. |
