'GERS RELAX AND PAY PENALTY

Arniston Rangers 1 Bathgate Thistle 1

In the first quarter of an hour play went from end to end with neither keeper having much to do.

But in the seventeenth minute Thistle keeper Spalding fouled Wilson, and referee Trotter awarded a penalty. The keeper was booked for protesting too strongly and Brown put Arniston ahead from the spot kick.

Later, Wilson collected the ball after a bad mistake by the Thistle defence and he slipped it into the middle, but Brown's effort was well off target.

After half-time Wilson went through the Thistle defence, but with only the keeper to beat he allowed the ball to run away from him and the chance went a-begging.

A little later the Arniston keeper cleared a long ball, and with the assistance of the wind the ball bounced over the opposite keeper but went just inches wide of the target.

Then Brown crossed from the right to Begbie, but with an open goal and from about three yards out he managed to shoot wide of the upright.

Play swung to the other end and Purdie tried a thirty-yarder which beat Wilson only to strike the woodwork and spin clear.

Later W. Hill broke through the Arniston defence, but he shot against the keeper.

It now looked as though the home side was quite prepared to settle for a one-goal lead as they went deeper into defence with only one man up front.

Given this opportunity, Thistle pushed forward and were finally rewarded in the seventy fourth minute when Allison lashed a fierce shot past Wilson for a well-deserved equaliser.

Things were now getting a bit rough and Brown of Arniston and C. Fowler of Bathgate, were both shown the red card.
