RANGERS INTO SEMI

Arniston 2, Livingstone 1 (after extra time)

In this replayed third round Drybrough Cup Tie, after half an hour's extra time, Arniston Rangers - at home - deservedly emerged victors over their opponents Livingstone United, under trying underfoot conditions, by the odd goal in three. The winning goal coming in the first period of extra time.

Opening play favoured the Rangers who took the lead after seven minutes. Davidson collected a Pryde cross to head past a helpless Stallard.

Livingstone struck back strongly but found no loophole in the sound Rangers defence.

The Rangers merited their one goal interval lead which might have been greater had they accepted several good chances.

Arniston resumed strongly, Ferguson shooting over from close range, while a McAuley shot was cleared off the Livingstone goal line.

After sixteen minutes play, in a quick raid, Livingstone levelled through sub. Gibson.

At ninety minutes the score remained equal, and extra time commenced. Minutes later Davidson restored Rangers lead.

No further scoring took place, and the Rangers advanced to the semi-final of the tournament. During the game Ferguson and Henry of Arniston, and Weir and McGovern of Livingstone received bookings.

CUP GLORY FOR ARNISTON

Linlithgow Rose 2 Arniston Rangers 3

The 1981 Drybrough Cup has a new home at Newbyres Park, Gorebridge, following last Saturday's win in the delayed cup final played at New Dundas Park, Bonnyrigg.

And it was a bonny Arniston performance as they "rose" to the occasion, showing character and resilience to defeat a dour but tough Linlithgow team, for whom this was their only chance of glory in a, for them, bleak season.

But, Arniston back in the "A" Division this season - and bringing a sizeable support in full voice, won an exciting game which first went one way, then the other.

Arniston were at full strength with Raymond McCauley, Gordon Robertson and Eric Davidson in the strike roles, and the trusted back duo of Keith and Rogers destined to thwart the Rose's threat from Sinclair and Love.

Arniston won a corner in the second minute, but Pryde's flag kick was cleared by Mick Reynolds.

An overhead kick by Davidson and a Ferguson drive showed Arniston's commitment from the start.

Dougie Keith was cool at the heart of the Rangers' defence as McCauley chipped over Arniston's second flag kick in the seventh minute.

Eric Davidson was inches away from a Jimmy Aird cross with the Gorebridge side pressing.

At the other end, Rogers cleared Linlithgow's first corner in eleven minutes, and, overall, Aird and Keith had made good starts to the cup final.

Rab Aitchison urged on the Rangers from the dug-out, and although there was stalemate with twenty two minutes gone and defences on top, the ice was broken in the twenty third minute.

Sinclair turned on a sixpence in the box and out-witted Keith for once, and his cross found Jimmy Love who scrambled the ball off Gowrie into the net, taking a knock on the jaw in the process. The Rose were one up!

Arniston took that blow on the chin and swept upfield to force another corner from which Davidson headed Pryde's flag kick against the post.

Sinclair again found himself in space in the twenty seventh minute, but his parting effort was blocked by Gowrie's outstretched leg.

Tommy Ure, the Rose keeper, with a heavily strapped leg, was still a stumbling block for the 'Gers but Arniston pushed 6 - 1 ahead on corners by the thirty seventh minute, and it was from corner number seven that Arniston equalised in forty two minutes.

A short corner involving Eric Davidson and Sam Lynch saw the ball switched infield, and after bobbing around the ball met Gordon Robertson's head and flew into the Rose net to make it 1 - 1 at half-time.

Arniston continued the good work and within a minute of the re-start they were 2 - 1 up.

In their very first raid the ball came to Jimmy Aird, who toe-ended the ball viciously into the net from fully twenty yards out.

But happy Arniston saw their lead cancelled within sixty seconds!

The Rose pushed up from the kick off, and hesitancy by Keith allowed Blaikie to shoot home a dramatic equaliser for Linlithgow at 2 - 2.

The Rose bloomed for a spell but Arniston steadied and replied with another goal to set their fans alight again. The goal came from a Rangers raid in the sixty second minute up the left wing, and when the ball came over Ray Macaulay the ex-Preston Athletic winger, slotted home an opportunist goal to put the jaunty 'Gers 3 - 2 ahead.

In the last quarter of the game Linlithgow introduced substitute Temperley, and although they pressed for spells, Arniston were equally dangerous on the break.

In the end if was an all-round victory for Arniston, 3 - 2 on goals, 10 - 5 on corners, and that was quite enough to win the Drybrough Cup.

Captain Dougie Keith was presented with the cup to tremendous cheers.

Congratulations and well done Arniston Rangers!

Tops for the cup winners were Keith, Lynch, Rogers and Aird, while Linlithgow only had good service from Ure and Love.

On Saturday, Arniston play another cup final - the Robertson Homes Cup final at King's Park, Dalkeith, against old rivals Newtongrange Star.

Yes, it's all happening for Rangers just now!
