1884-1890 - Arniston Defunct ?
It is believed that Arniston Rangers were defunct between 1884 and 1890. However the following news clippings were found.
Newspaper clipping dated 25.12.1884
| The Arniston Rangers having, through several reasons, broken up last season, have again gathered themselves together, and played their opening match on Saturday, when they had for their guests the Dalkeith Rangers. After an exceedingly hard game victory rested with the Dalkeith team by two points to nil. For the Arniston club, it may be stated that only three of last year's first eleven players were in the team on Saturday, some of them having left the district since last season. |

Dalkeith Rangers v Arniston Rangers - The return match between these clubs came off on the ground of the Dalkeith Rangers at Annfield Park on Saturday. Both teams have undergone some alteration since they first met, when the Dalkeith club came off victorious by three goals to nil. The visitors set the ball in motion and the play remained even for some time, until the forwards of the strangers, with a rush got past the home backs and sent the leather through the posts. The Dalkeith team then began to show up a bit and soon equalised matters, and within a short time scored their second goal. No further scoring took place in the first half, the game standing 2 - 1 in favour of the home players. On play being resumed the game became very fast, the home players keeping the ball in the strangers territory for some time, but the shooting for goal was very poor. Eventually the home players secured a corner from which they scored their third goal, but the ball was kicked into play by one of the Arniston backs. A long argument occurred over this point, the one team maintaining that the ball was through the posts, while the other side maintained that the ball was exactly in line with the goal posts. While the argument was going on one of the strangers ran the ball up the field and the home goalkeeper not understanding the nature of the discussion, let the ball go between the posts without offering any resistance. The umpires decided in favour of the Arniston team, and on referring to the referee he decided in favour of Dalkeith, but his decision was not acted on. This made the game equal - two goals each. Believing that they were not getting justice the play of the home team fell off, and before time was up the Arniston team put on another goal, thus winning (!) by three goals to two. If the shooting of one or two of the Dalkeith forwards had been a little better the score would have stood different, as they had more opportunities of scoring than their opponents. |
