RANGERS DESERVED THIS WIN
Arniston Rangers 4 Newtongrange Star 1 An under-strength Arniston Rangers deservedly entered the R.L. Rae Cup quarter-finals, against a disappointing Star side, lacking in finishing power. Wlith the advantage of a strong wind the Star held the advantage in the opening exchanges, but made little headway against the Rangers defence. Arniston gradually came more into the game as an attacking force, and after twenty five minutes play went ahead. Guthrie's soft shot eluding Hogg to slowly enter the net. The Star fought back and although McDonald was the busier keeper, they never looked like equalising. Just on half-time further disaster befell the Star, when the Rangers were awarded a somewhat soft penalty. Guthrie converted to give his side a two-goal interval lead. On resuming, Arniston attacked strongly and after ten minutes play, Dowds, with a powerful shot, added a third Rangers goal. The Star hit back and Sproull reduced the leeway, but any hopes of the Star saving the tie were blasted when Guthrie completed his hat-trick by converting another penalty award Arniston - McDonald, Bannon, Chapman, Carnegie, Devlin, Bowmaker, Gillan, Dowds, Flynn, Guthrie, Roseburgh. (Sub.), Cooper. Newtongrange - Hogg, Knox, Salton, Rennie, Forrester, Anderson, Sproull, Stoddart, Liddle, Prentice. (Subs.), Purcell and McMichael. a Referee: Mr. R. Keggie, Edinburgh.
