JUNIOR FOOTBALL GAMES IN BRIEF

Arniston Rangers 3, Johnstone Burgh 0 Arniston Rangers gained a sensational home first round Scottish Junior Cup win when they ousted the Scottish Cupholders, Johnstone Burgh in a pulsating struggle which kept the 2,000 spectators on their toes until the end. Rangers went ahead after three minutes play. A free-kick by Archibald in the goal area was brilliantly headed home by Mair. Johnstone hit back but Thomson saved twice. The Rangers goal ran a scare when Thomson partially saved a McShea effort, but Blyth kicked clear on the goal line.

Arniston increased their lead when Glen, unmarked, collected to pick his spot with an unsaveable drive. Both goals ran narrow escapes in quick raids. Near half-time Arniston forced several fruitless corners and the post saved a certain Rangers counter, To the interval Johnstone were on top but the sound Rangers defence, although conceding several corners, prevailed.

On resuming, Johnstone took command keeping the Rangers defence under constant pressure, but could find no loophole. The issue was settled when Arniston broke through and McEwan netted a third goal to knock-out the cupholders.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL GAMES IN BRIEF

Arniston Rangers 5, Pollock 2.

For the second round of the Scottish Junior Cup, against Pollock, Arniston Rangers fielded the same side which vanquished the Scottish Junior Cupholders, Johnstone Burgh. In the opening minutes, Haddin in front of an untenanted goal - missed. Pollock struck back but Thomson saved brilliantly powerful drives from McWade and Russell. Two fruitless corners were conceded before Arniston raised the seige. After fifteen minutes Arniston went ahead when McEwan crossed to Glen who transferred to Hope who slammed the ball past the helpless Parker. The success was shortlived, however, Cooper testing Thomson and a minute later a high dropping ball from Wright was deflected by McDonald into the net. Despite hot protests of the Rangers defenders the referee allowed the score. Arniston forced the pace and were rewarded in the 35th minutes when McEwan from a Glen pass, restored the Rangers lead.

After the Arniston defence had repelled several dangerous Pollock raids Hadden was grassed in the penalty box, but the appeal went unheeded by the referee. Mair, however, gained possession to net. Near half-time a Glen shot was deflected past his own keeper by a defender to give Arniston a rather inflated three-goal margin at half-time.

Four minutes after the resumption Pollock reduced the leeway through McDonald. The score was again disputed, but the protests were ignored by the referee. Tempers became ruffled and several players were lectured before McWade was booked for a bad foul.

The issue was settled when Mair regained the Rangers three-goal lead. Shortly afterwards he missed his hat-trick when Parker saved his "spot" kick effort. In the end Arniston fully merited their victory.
