FIFERS OUTLCASSED BY ARNISTON
ARNISTON RANGERS..............3 Spoiled by a gale and heavy rain second-round Scottish Junior Cup tie provided little exitement. The Rangers, with the gale behind them, quickly made ground but Mitchell, twice, missed narrowly, while Gillespie just failed to connect with a Shaw cross. The visitors surprised the Rangers' defence with a quick attack but McAdam, with only Fairbairn to beat, shot yards wide. Rangers dictated, but despite persistent pressure could not take the lead, through poor finishing by the forwards, fine saving by Lister and timely Davidson and Penman interventions. Then in a minute the Rangers were two up, Gillespie tipping an Anderson cross over Lister's head, and in the next attack Mitchell headed home. Fairbairn, the home keeper, was practically a spectator watching his forward colleagues squandering countless chances. Two goals at half-time was a poor reward for the first half, nearly all one-way traffic, and did not appear a sufficient margin. The visitors showed improvement on resuming but their close passing tactics were their undoing. Fairbairn brought off several good saves but was also fortunate that the Fifers' frontal attack could miss opportunities. The issue was settled when Mitchell netted a third Rangers'goal. The Fifers put up a rather disappointing display and the Rangers were never fully extended. An easy Rangers' win.
