Season 1956-1957

Season again started well for Arniston with a win in the 'friendly' against Glasgow Benburb at Tinto Park, Glasgow by 3 - 1. Arniston scorers, Martin 2, Paterson. Arniston started a great run of victories to take us up to the end of 1956, the only hiccup was in November, Closing in the National competition, 5 - 1 against Lochore Welfare at Lochore. The victories started with a great win over the West 'cracks' Bo'ness United by 4 - 2 in the Brown Cup, date, September 1956. Arniston scorers, Martin 2, Glen 2. Other notable wins were 7 - 1 over Alva Albion Rangers in the League Cup, 5 - 3 over Ormiston Primrose in the Murray Cup, a 7 - 1 defeat of Broxburn Athletic in the League Cup, 3 - 2 over Haddington in the League 6 - 0 win over Preston Athletic again in the League, and a 7 - 3 win over Ormiston Primrose in the League ended the year happily for Arniston.

1957 started like a see-saw for Arniston, winning well one week and losing the next. Example, a good 4 - 2 win over Tranent Juniors, was followed by a 4 - 0 defeat by Bathgate Thistle in the Thornton Shield. Season continued to fluctuate for Arniston, beating Stoneyburn Juniors 9 - 0 in the Brown Cup, then losing to West Calder United in the League Cup Quarter Final, and Loanhead Mayflower 5 - 3. More see-saw form followed with the season finishing with Arniston winning the Brown Cup 6 - 3 over Armadale Thistle at Tynecastle. Arniston were 2 - 0 down at one stage.

The Arniston committee must have been disturbed by the high quota of defeats, especially in the latter end of the season, when they lost heavily to Newtongrange Star by 7 - 1 in the East of Scotland Cup, lost 5 - 0 to Dalkeith Thistle, 4 - 3 to Easthouses Lily and 2 - 1 to Haddington Athletic.

ARNISTON RANGERS........3 TRANENT JUNIORS............1

(Game abandoned)

Rangers were heading for a decisive win when this Rae Cup first-round tie was abandoned 25 minutes from time.

Surprisingly enough, the visitors opened the scoring when Caw netted from a Menzies pass.

In 20 minutes Arniston equalised, Paterson accepting a rebound to score.

The home side went ahead when Mitchell completed a great run with a neat lob. A Tranent raid saw Boyd turn a Wilson raker round the post.

Near the interval Paterson added a third for Arniston.

FIGHTING RANGERS ROUT STAR

Arniston Rangers............7 Newtongrange Star.........1

Rangers were on the attack from the start, and the Star defence was put through the mill. With twelve minutes gone, Arniston took a deserved lead when Weir placed the ball well wide of Birrell.

A bad Davidson miskick provided Patterson with a golden opportunity, which he promptly accepted, to put Rangers two up. The Star forced a fruitless corner but shortly afterwards Martin, after a fine run up the wing, crossed to Slater who headed home.

Arniston struck back and Davidson made amends for his previous lapse by a desperate goal-line clearance. In quick succession Durie twice halted Patterson but the centre in a third attempt, restored the Rangers' two goal lead. A fine chance to reduce the leeway was squandered by H. Young when he headed past from an ideal Martin cross. Near half-time another mix-up in the Star defence culminated in Mitchell netting a rebound from the crossbar.

Arniston resumed aggressively, Gillespie testing Birrell before Mitchell collected a loose ball to net a fifth Arniston goal. Despite the margin the Star claimed territorial advantage for a spell, but a series of abortive corners were their only reward, and further goals by Baird and Tulloch raised the Rangers total to seven.
