Season 1933-1934
The return of Arniston Rangers did not herald an immediate golden era for Arniston. Their first two games were both away, and resulted in two defeats, 4 - 2 against Wallyford Bluebell, and 4 - 1 against Portobello Thistle. Arniston continued to struggle, losing to Linlithgow Rose 2 - 1 at Linlithgow in the Musseburgh Cup, after a replay. Football is a funny old game, Arniston returned to winning ways with a vengeance, beating Fauldhouse 3 - 0 at Fauldhouse in the league, Thorntree United 9 - 2 at Arniston in the Scottish Junior Cup, and completed the double over Fauldhouse, at Arniston, winning 5 - 3. October, 1933 gave us an Arniston line up for a league game against Stoneyburn Juniors which by the way gave Arniston a 5 - 3 win. Arniston team: Stewart, Blyth, Irvine, Watson, Rodgers, Reilly, Archibald, Connabay, Cumming, McNamie, Swan
The year ended with a 2 - 1 defeat by Tranent Juniors in the East of Scotland Cup. 1934 saw again the emergence of Arniston Rangers as a powerful and respected football club. Between January and May, 1934 Arniston played eight listed games, they won six and lost only two. Notable victories were achieved, a 3 - 2 win over Musselburgh Bruntonians in the Thornton Shield, a 1 - 0 win in the league over Dalkeith Thistle, a 4 - 1 win in the Thornton Shield over Thorntree United and to finish a good season, a 7 - 3 victory over Ormiston Primrose and a 8 - 1 victory over Portobello Thistle in the Consolation Cup, and a 4 - 0 win over Linlithgow Rose in the Consolation Cup.

| Arniston Rangers v Stoneyburn Juniors - This Midlothian League game was played at Gorebridge on Saturday, the team lining up as follows:- Arniston Rangers - Stewart; Blyth and Irvine; Watson, Rodgers and Reilly; Archibald, Connaboy, Cumming, McNamee and Swan. Stoneyburn Juniors - Collins; Roberts and Green; McKay, Holmes and McGeachy; Garrity, Sweeney, Harkins, Leonard and Cameron. Referee, D. Brodie, Leith. Right at the start there was a spate of scoring, three goals being registered within the first five minutes. The home side got the first, Swan getting through practically from the kick off and giving Collins no chance with his finishing shot. Stoneyburn responded strongly, and were soon on level terms through Sweeney. Arniston immediately afterwards got another goal with the aid of a penalty awarded after Connaboy had been brought down in the penalty area. Irvine took the kick, and made no mistake. The home side continued to be dangerous, and Swan, well supported by Reilly, was a source of much trouble to the visitors' defence. Cumming also proved difficult to hold, and he had two fine tries, the latter of which was stopped by the crossbar. A raid by the visitors gave the home crowd a fright, Cameron getting past Watson and Blyth, and crossing to the goalmouth where Harkins took the pass and shot for goal, but the ball went narrowly past with Stewart beaten. The Arniston men, as a rule, however, were having matters much their own way, and it came as no surprise when they increased their lead before the interval. At half-time, Arniston held the lead by 3 goals to 1. Stoneyburn responded strongly, and Harkins reduced the leeway, but a few minutes later the home side asserted themselves, and Cumming again found the net. The Arniston forwards had further opportunities in the subsequent exchanges, but they failed to take them. Roberts, the visitors right back, had to leave the field with an eye injury for a time, but even with this handicap the visitors put up a good fight, and on one occasion Stewart had to look lively to clear from Leonard. Just before the close, McNamee scored for Arniston, and Harkins counted for Stoneyburn. Result:- Arniston Rangers, 5 goals - Stoneyburn Juniors , 3. |
