Season 1920-1921

Season started badly for Arniston losing to Bonnyrigg Rose by 2 goals to 1. Improvements were already beginning to show in the Arniston ranks with good wins over Wemyss Athletic, Bonnyrigg Rose and Pumpherston Juniors, but the name of the game is consistency and Arniston sadly fell short when it mattered in the crunch game at the end of the season. Performance of the season was beating Pumpherston Juniors 4 - 1, playing all the second half with ten men.

Arniston Rangers v Bonnyrigg Rose - These teams met at Victoria Park, Newtongrange to play off their undecided second round Scottish Junior Cup tie. Arniston took up the game in the opening stages and subjected the Bonnyrigg goal to a severe bombardment, but Gibson disposed of all the shots which came to him. Burns then had a run on the left for the Rose, but shot wildly past. Rangers were soon back at the other end, and McKenzie beat Gibson with a hard drive. Half-time:- Arniston, 1 goal; Bonnyrigg, 0.

The second period started in the Rangers' favour and they soon added a second point through Tait. Bonnyrigg could make no headway against Rangers' defence, and some time afterwards Forrest netted a third goal. The Rose came more into the game near the finish, but could not score. Result:- Arniston Rangers, 3 goals; Bonnyrigg Rose, 0.

VETERANS' FOOTBALL MATCH - On Wednesday evening of last week much interest was taken in a football match between Newtongrange Star veterans and Arniston Rangers veterans at Newbyres Park. The game, which was witnessed by a large turnout of spectators proved to be an exhibition of clean football, embodying the best methods of attack and footwork necessary to make the sport interesting. During the first half the homesters did most of the pressing , but after the interval the visitors got some of their own back. Result 3 - 2 in favour of the home team. The teams were represented as follows:- Newtongrange Veterans - T. Moffat, T. Naismith, Thos. Moffat, Wm. Horsburgh, R. Lockhart, T. Conlan, S. Selkirk, J. Morris , W. Barton, J.Orr and A. Sneddon. Arniston Veterans - R. Lennie, D. Moffat, J. Mitchell, J.W. Smith, W. Weir, T. Chatham, A. Ritchie, W. Gibson, R. Irvine, J. Murray and W. Aitken.

A most interesting personage was "Bob" Mercer, the famous Heart of Midlothian and international centre-half, who kindly consented to fill the role of referee. Those who did duty as linesmen were Wm. Smith (Quin) and Jas. Bell, a popular member of Newtongrange Dramatic Club. By subscription the sum of £3.2s. was raised in aid of the local soup kitchen. Arniston & Gorebridge Pipe Band was in attendance.
