Season 1897-1898

Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic v Arniston Rangers - These teams engaged in the first round of the East of Scotland Junior Cup, on the ground of the former on Saturday last. A disagreeable wind was blowing, which threatened to interfere greatly with the play. With the wind in their favour, the "maroons" kicked off. Aided by the elements Arniston made several rather dangerous incursions upon the Rose citadel. From one of these raids, however, they were rewarded - their outside right doing the needful. They "repeated the dose" a minute of two afterwards. It was now thought it was to be a case of goals with the visitors. The ground club, however, by a combined rush, at length registered a point. Till the end of half-time the game was fiercely contested, but in response to the frantic yells of their supporters, neither team could increase their lead. Half-time - Rangers, 2; Rose 1.

With only one goal down, and the wind against them, the Athletic were fully expected to make things hum in the second period. This they set about doing at the very outset, the Arniston defence getting more bristled than was to their liking. The equaliser was sure to come , and a regular beauty it was too, Liddell beating three men and scoring. This success they followed up with another point shortly afterwards. The feeling of the Bonnyrigg section of the crowd at this stage of the game can be better imagined than described, so great was their enthusiasm. Unfortunately, roughness was now introduced; in fact, it had been going on from the commencement. The referee had no alternative but to "march" off Naysmyth and Gifford, but this in no way abated the rough tactics of the players. As a result of a blow being struck by one of the Bonnyrigg men, the spectators rushed on to the field, and the game was brought to a standstill. The outcome of this "altercation" was the dismissal of Shankie and Ferrier. The field was cleared, but with only nine men on each side all interest was gone, the crowd being too much interested in their own discussions. It was now semi-darkness, and it was difficult to follow the ball. No further scoring took place, and the sound of the whistle brought welcome relief to everyone concerned. A more disgraceful exhibition of football it would be difficult to witness. Result - Rose 3 goals; Rangers, 2.
