| Dalkeith Rangers v Arniston
Rangers - The local club paid a visit to Newbyres Park on Saturday last,
and there met the Arniston Rangers in the League contest. There were one
or two changes from Dalkeith's advertised eleven, "Sinclair"
taking "MacGregor's" place in goal, Tom Duncan making a
welcome re-appearance at left back, J. Watson playing right half, and
Brand partnering Thomson on the left wing. Teams:- Dalkeith Rangers -
"Sinclair"; Johnstone and T. Duncan; Watson, John Purves and
A. Duncan; Fairbairn, A. Ewing, McAlpine, Brand and Thomson. Arniston
Rangers - Ferrier; Hogg and Deans; Smith, Moffat and Hughes; Nicol,
Bernard, Naysmith, Chatham and McGuinness. Referee - Mr. H. McMillan (Ormiston
Primrose).
There was no wind to speak of, and it was immaterial to either side who was fortunate in winning the toss. The attendance was not large. Thomson early furnished a bit of a sensation by a nice run on the left which he finished up by a good shot, but Ferrier had no difficulty in coping with it. Play was now transferred to the other end, and a very determined attack was made upon the Dalkeith citadel. But for the sound play of the backs and the smart saving on the part of "Sinclair", the Arnistonians should certainly have notched a point. Play for a time ranged in mid-field where a few foul-kicks were given against the visitors, and from one of them the home team got into close quarters again. Arniston at length opened the scoring Nicol with a swift shot, low down, beating the Dalkeith custodian. The ground team had, if anything, the best of matters at this period, and it was well for Dalkeith that their defence was good. Shortly before half-time Arniston scored another goal. Half-time Arniston Rangers, 2 goals; Dalkeith Rangers 0. On resuming, both teams went at it with a will which seemed as if Dalkeith were bent on improving matters, as they completely bombarded the Arniston goalmouth for a time. The backs and goalkeeper had always to be on the alert, as the visitor's right wing was proving a thorn in their side. Dalkeith's well deserved point came at last, Ewing having no difficulty in scoring off a beautifully placed foul-kick well down the field by Tom Duncan, who was playing a rattling game. The right wing of Arniston now had an unexpected run, and "Sinclair" in attempting to fist the ball accidentally struck Nicol in the mouth, but not before No. 3 had been scored for the League champions. The Dalkeith forwards had numerous chances presented to them, but they were decidedly weak in front of goal. Before call of time the homesters added a fourth goal - a beauty which "Sinclair" had no chance to save, being far out of his reach. A rather fast game ended - Arniston Rangers 4 goals, Dalkeith Rangers 1. |

- First Round
Dalkeith Rangers v Arniston Rangers - The Committee having sustained Arniston's protest on account of Dalkeith playing an ineligible man, the tie was ordered to be replayed. The previous encounter resulted in favour of the "blues and whites" by a goal to nil. The match accordingly came off at Mr. Dods Park on Saturday last. The ground in the beginning of the week was very hard owing to the frost, but on Thursday it gave way to rain, which continued more or less till Saturday forenoon, when hopes were entertained of the match being played under fair conditions. The field of play, as was to be expected, was rather soft, but it was not so bad considering the rain that had fallen. The teams on both sides were below their full strength, and the following took the field:- Dalkeith: Archibald, Stewart, Naysmyth, John Purves, Murphy, A. Duncan, Fairbairn, Aytoun, McAlpine, Craig, A. Ewing. Arniston:- Ritchie, Armstrong, Deans, Porteous, Moffat, Hughes, Peacock, Ferrier, Bernard, Nasmyth, McGuinnes,. Referee: Mr. Geo. Robertson (Niddrie Bluebell). There was a pretty fair turnout of spectators, and the crowd was constantly being swelled. Winning the toss, Arniston wisely elected to kick with the wind, which at the time of kick-off was blowing with terrific force towards the Mart end. A start was made at 2.40 - ten minutes behind the "billed" time - and with such odds against them Dalkeith's only course was to defend their citadel. At the very outset the local goalmouth had a narrow escape, Archibald running out and picking up the ball almost on the line. He was at once surrounded by a few "Maroons", and a regular Rugby maul ensued. But he pluckily stuck to the sphere, and in the end got it away amidst the plaudite of the onlookers. Dalkeith were the next to become dangerous, and so hard pressed were the backs that they had to concede a corner. Nothing came of it, however. It was more the result of the wind than the good play of the Arniston forwards that brought the ball once more into the home territory. Goal-kicks were innumerable, and the "Maroons" quintette certainly convinced one of the impression that was formed of them on their last visit - viz., their inability to shoot. If their shooting had been anything deadly at all they could have had two or three goals to their credit. Their left wing was the worst in this respect. But a "surprise packet" was in store for both players and spectators alike. A scrimmage took place in the local goalmouth, and as a result the ball went over the line fully a yard outside the post. To the unbounded delight of the Arnistonians and the just disappointment of the Dalkeithians , Mr. Robertson pointed to midfield. Dalkeith earnestly appealed to that official that he had made a gross blunder, but it was in vain and the ball was duly centred. It was certainly hard lines on the homesters. The next incident of note was a pretty run on the left by Craig, but his final effort was weak, and one of the opposing backs with a big kick transferred play to the other end. One could not but admire the sturdy defence that the local back division offered to the "Maroons", in spite of the wind that was blowing in their faces. Ten minutes from half-time the visitors notched a second point, the wind so deceiving Archibald that he made no attempt to save. Half-time Arniston 2 goals; Dalkeith, 0. Of the second half little need be said, the game being only eight minutes old, during which time the homesters had the play all in their favour, when, on the advice of the referee, both captains agreed to postpone the match. It would have been sheer nonsense to have continued the match any longer, the wind and rain rendering further play out of the question. Result: Arniston 2 goals - Dalkeith 0. |
