Arniston's First Championship Win
Extract from Newspaper Clipping dated 23.5.1895
| 'Arniston Rangers, last year's champions, after winning their first eight matches never secured another win in their remaining four games, being defeated by Tranent, Dalhousie and Newtongrange, and drawing with the latter. After such a splendid beginning Arniston have merely, in making such a wretched finish, followed what seems to have been an inborn failing in them of late years, viz, staleness at the end of the season.' |

FOOTBALL GOSSIP For the fourth time the Arniston Rangers and Newtongrange Athletic met in the second round of the Donaldson Cup. The game was marked with the usual amount of determination, and considerable excitement prevailed. There was a record gate, nearly 800 spectators lining the ropes. In the first portion the Newtongrange experienced hard lines in not scoring; and in the second portion of the game the Arniston took up the lead and kept their opponents at bay. Mr. Dickson, Musselburgh, acted as referee, and it is needless to say, performed his duties efficiently and impartially. More than once the spectators signified their approval of his decisions by heartily cheering. If there were more referees like Mr. Dickson there would be less disorderly scenes, and still less dis-satisfaction at football matches. The result of the game was hailed with much delight by the supporters of the Arniston Rangers. This now leaves the Rangers free to play the Musselburgh Windsor in the semi-final of the competition. Although the Windsor are a capable team, yet on their present form, the Rangers should have no difficulty in entering the final; the more so as the match is to be decided on the ground at the Blue Bell at Niddrie. The Arniston Rangers, undoubtedly are distinguishing themselves this winter. They now occupy a foremost place in county football. Their struggle with the Newbattle men on Saturday was a very keen one and feeling on both sides ran high. It was the third time they had met, and on both previous occasions the result was a draw. But on Saturday the Rangers carried off the palm of victory. They are receiving deserved local encouragement. The parish minister has presented to the club a silver medal, ornamented with the Scottish Thistle. Valuable prizes have also been given by Mr. Hastie, the Schoolhouse, and two other contributors. The Rangers should do better things yet. |
