Peter Lynch gets his head to the ball despite being put under pressure by this Edinburgh defender 10/5/08 East Region South Division Blackburn United 2 Edinburgh United 1 The visitors opened brightly on an overcast and thundery afternoon and forced Blackburn onto the back foot, their best chance of the opening spell coming in the twelfth minute when a cross from the right by Campbell found Reid, but his glancing header slid inches past Francis Carlin’s far post. It was Reid again who created Edinburgh’s next opportunity when his snap shot on the turn was comfortably held by Carlin. Moments later Blackburn created their first real chance when a flick on by Lee Docherty set Peter Lynch free inside the box, but his shot from an acute angle was half blocked by Atai in the Edinburgh goal and the ball looped across the empty goalmouth and was cleared. Moments later Bowsher cleared the ball towards his own goal and it creeped inches over. On the half hour mark a throw-in on the right from Jordan Rintoul found Docherty and he turned his marker to fire in a shot that was straight at Atai. However, on thirty one minutes the opening goal came when Campbell was found by Reid on the overlap down the right wing and his cross into the box saw MONTGOMERY diving to head low past Carlin. Before the half ended Christie had a twenty five yard effort which was well held by Carlin. The second half opened with neither team in the ascendancy, and few chances were created. This changed with twenty minutes left when substitute Andy McQuillan was fouled twenty five yards out. Alan Brown took the free kick quickly and found the unmarked Scott LIVINGSTONE who turned and fired past Atai to level the scores. A minute later and Edinburgh nearly regained the lead when a free kick into the box found McIntosh and his overhead kick was tipped over by Carlin. However, in the eighty fourth minute it was Blackburn who grabbed the lead, a long ball out of defence by Davie Sneddon saw McQuillan get in front of his marker McIntosh, who appeared to be tugging at the youngster's shirt as he moved into the box, and both got a foot to the bouncing ball for it to loop over Atai’s outstretched hand and into the net with McQUILLAN claiming the goal. Into injury time and one final chance fell to Edinburgh when Reid danced past several defenders to fire off a shot which Dougie Polwart deflected inches past.
